Waiting in the wings…
We’re getting ready for the Topflite NZ National Bird Show.
In July over 1200 different birds in 16 different categories will be on show in Hamilton. We’re proud to sponsor the big event and to support the hard work of the entrants and the beauty of their birds.
The event is the culmination of a busy calendar of regional shows throughout New Zealand. In each of these shows the many bird club members have presented their best birds to the discerning eye of the judges. Now the best of the best is arriving at the big national show.
With awards in Champion, Novice and Junior categories there’s always plenty of competition throughout the event and this year will be no different. From canaries to parrots, cockatiels to lovebirds, the colour and beauty on display will certainly be memorable.
The New Zealand Federation of Bird Clubs, an organisation first formed in 1932, runs the show. The Federation helps to oversee the 30+ bird clubs throughout the country and the hundreds of members within these clubs. With such a far-reaching history the chance to have your name recorded in the winning results is certainly a strong motivation to the many breeders at the show.
Federation president Steve Parry knows how much goes into a beautiful bird, and how winners can come from anywhere.
“Anyone can exhibit – there are novice and champion categories and, while it varies around the country, we’re seeing a lot of younger people joining up now,” says Parry. “Sure, the national (bird show) can be won by anyone. But only those with experience will consistently do well.”
While results can surprise, and the great hopes of some competitors dashed, that doesn’t hamper a strong sense of community and goodwill at the event. Everyone is united with their love for birds here.
That’s one of the reasons we always look forward to the national show each year, and why we’ve sponsored the event for 19 years now. Hopefully we’ll see you at the show – be sure to come up and say hi!
