Digging, scratching, dust bathing, ‘fertilising’ the garden. A bit of laying. We usually have a couple of team meetings each day too.
What’s the best part of the job?
The taste testing. No chicken product goes out the Topflite door without going past us first. After some years in the role we’ve got a pretty good handle on what the market will respond to. The Hentastic Chick Sticks are a classic example — we knew they were onto a winner with those!
What is one thing you’d like people to know about Topflite?
They really like getting feedback from customers and respond genuinely to it. Recently we indicated that the Scratch & Lay mix needed a little something extra. When the same feedback came from the market, Topflite reviewed the formula and added a higher protein poultry pellet into the mix.
While we’re on the subject, here’s a photo from one of Topflite’s new customers, a happy Scratch & Lay convert. Check out the Orpington whopper on the left!
Do you have any pets?
No, but we are interested in getting some mealworms to keep around the place…
Where’s your favourite place in New Zealand?
You can’t beat Oamaru. Sunshine, coastal air and rich soil for growing delicious food.
Outside of work what are your interests?
Once we’ve got our jobs done for the day, there’s nothing better than laying around in the sun. Other than that, we like foraging for silverbeet and other garden treats, maintaining the pecking order and watching the humans chat — they’ve all got such distinctive personalities!
